A quick extra video about something that arrived in the post.
MiniDisc & Cassettes available from eox.no/shop/
Cassettes also available in the US from www.the8bitguy.com/product-category/music/
IMPORTANT NOTE (for people who care about these things) These MiniDiscs are BURNED rather than Pressed. The facilities for pressing pre-recorded MiniDiscs no longer exist. Therefore these MiniDiscs are recorded on standard recordable blanks in real-time. This makes no difference to the listener experience - but it’s been pointed out that while it was implied, I didn’t specifically mention it in this unscripted off the cuff improvised quickly assembled extra video ...so I’m mentioning it here...in the video description text box that no one has read since 1978

I loved, loved, loved my MiniDisc players back in the day. I owned multiple portable models over the years, right from the Sony MZ1 that I bought on a whim from a random electronics shop while visiting NYC for the first time in 1993. I also had a dedicated recorder in my living room for making my own 'mix-tapes' and copies of CDs to strut around with. It wasn't until I broke down and bought a 160 GB iPod classic in about 2007 that I finally moved away from MiniDisc. I wish now that I had kept the machines and discs instead of selling them in a bundle on ebay for a song in 2012. Oh well, live and learn.

I've just picked up a Net MD player but there's no way i can get Windows 10 to talk to it. Very little software the isn't compatible.. so now what do i do?

According to a comment underneath his other minidisc video it is somehow possible to get sonic stage running on windows 10 even though it isn't supported anymore. But using netmd will result in a lower recording quality anyway. So just record your music in realtime, this way you'll get the best recording quality.

Last week I dug out my Sony MZ-R55 and opened up a pristine TDK red MD so that I could record an old LP I bought at a charity shop. I was thinking of Techmoan as I unwrapped the plastic as well as wondering how long I have had the discs (about 15 to 20 years, some still in their multi-pack wrapping). I bought the audio recorder/player to go alongside my Sony MDM-X4 which I also still have (it is on a table next to my PC's printer).

I wish Mini Discs had caught on bigger, the only reason i never got a player is cus CD's were already everywhere, had the internet revolution and MP3 revolution not happened when they did MD's might have lasted longer and overtaken CD's....I always wanted a MD player though cus that setup seemed better than CD's....

This case looks like the normal cases that you could buy empty minidiscs in, for recording. But MD really was an underwehelming format, I was very disappointed with it, because of the bad dynamic range, caused by the compression. In fact the old MCs soundes way more alive and made for fun, while the MDs sounded boring and tired all the time, no matter what music style and equalizer tricks I tried. Also of course, it was always a paing that you couldn't copy a full 90 minute MC to an MD. Of course there whare the late rMD standards with better compression and playing time, but the format was already dead when they arrived, because much cheaper and portable mp3 players where just storming the market. The MD would have been a superb universal home medium for the late 80s and early 90s, but it came to late, and unitl it was affordable it had not much sense anymore, because of CD burners.

Hace 14 días
freund333
freund333

+ElMariachi Well how do you like the sound of the minidisc recording in this video? I know it's not the original cause youtube compression and so on but still. Most people say that the recording on a minidisc sounds BETTER then the original cd cause the ATRAC enhances different parts or frequencies to compensate the loss of quality caused by the compression and therefore it can sound richer and stronger. I also don't know how good those Kenwood decks where cause i never had one. And you have to remember that cds had a much shorter lifespan cause they weren't magneto optical and many of them started to fail after just 10 years or less. And many people also love minidisc cause of all the editing functions. You could do thing you wouldn't be abled to do with a cd burner.

Hace 4 días
ElMariachi
ElMariachi

+freund333Yes, I know how expensive cd burners where, because I was watching their prices since the late 80s, when they where like 20000DM (10000€) and waiting for my time to get one. That time came in the early to mid 90s, when I bought one for 2000DM and used it on the SCSI controller of my Amiga :) But they had so many advantages. After some years there where had 90Minute CDs, CD players where very cheap, the media was cheaper than Minidiscs and you could basically play them everywhere, while having your current great mixes on minidisc meant you where doomed to only being able to hear it for yourself mostly. And at this time atrac still was in it's reallyi bad early stages. Btw: I just had a closer look at my old Kenwood DM-3090 from back then and found that it actually featured atrac 4.5 already - and still had a terribly lifeless and boring sound, with every kind of musiv I recorded on it (Mostly directly from CD using SPDIF).I know wonder, if it had a malfunction from the beginning on, or if even the later versions of atrac where this bad, too..it's clearly much worse than even MC, besides the tape hiss. I don't think it was a specific problem of that model of MD recorder, because I have read some reviews about it, and it's said to have a good sound quality.

Hace 4 días
freund333
freund333

Have you watched his other video about minidisc? By the time they came out in 1992 a cd recorder or cd burner was even more expensive then the minidisc recorders. Also what kind of recorder did you use that it sounded worse than a compact cassette? You do know that the ACTRAC format kept getting better and better over time right?

First of all, being completely covered when not in use cut dust intrusion by 99.9%. There is no "record head" on optical media. A laser unit though. I still have a LG DVD Recorder and although the DVD's is not inside a sleeve, dust does not enter the tray when closed.

Hace 21 un día

There IS a record head inside a minidisc recorder that sits on top of the disc during the recording process. And Minidisc can get very dirty inside when not stored correctly.

3:43 I went through a couple of minidisc systems in six months. Not reliable! They BOTH started off with just a couple of gaps in the sound and then they PROGRESSIVELY got worse until eventually they wouldn't play the discs at all. Maybe that's why they failed as a product.

Hace 24 días
freund333
freund333

Well this is not normal. Most people here will tell you that they still use their minidisc recorders from 20 years ago. Also the ones from the video are quite old. Minidisc was reliable. Only thing that could have been the problem was dirty discs that slowly destroyed your systems. My first minidisc recorder failed after 18 years and i used him almost every day.

Is a mini disk lossy or lossless audio ?

Hace 27 días

Normal minidiscs are lossy and HI-MDs can also be recorded in lossless PCM. Normal minidiscs are using ATRAC and this got better and better over time until you wouldn't hear the difference between the cd and the recording anymore.

Very nice. I'm actually amazed by the sound quality of MiniDisc. Just a shame it was rejected by the buying public. They are definitely much easier and safer to handle than a CD and virtually impossible to damage the MiniDisc itself due to its protection cover.

Not impossible. Dust can still get inside and that could scratch the disc when recording it and it could also destroy your recordhead. So you have to store them inside the case.

The only thing that would make sense would be HI-MDs since they can hold an entire cd in lossless pcm quality. With all those audiophile's out there nobody would buy a new pre-recorded minidisc in lossy quality.

This music it just reminded me mine first experiences with Winamp at the year ~2000 using Windows 98 PC. Witch was not mp3 files but .mod or something like that files 100kB each, so whole album could fit on 1.44MB FD. Witch was amazing in comparison to midi. At the first time i were astonished what great compression format is that for dial-up internet to have, until discovered it was some sort of midi kind of music either. Lacking of expensive to me CD writer. Since im electronic technician graduating at that time designing some hardware back then (function generator and frequency metter) i had idea of making 8bit AVR based 1.44MB reader just to write and play it. I wish to go back in time to make it. The advantage would be even much cheeper and more popular reader to read on. No problems for reading on the go just as CD-R had. And popular writer to write own compilations. Maybe even 5.25" to realese "vinyl" kind of single experience.

Cause you could change your recordings afterwards. Something you couldn't do with a cd. You can re-arange your tracks as well as erase a track in the middle without leaving an audible gap. You could also edit your track, combine and divide them, you could ad faders and even change the record volume after the recording. And since minidiscs are magneto optical discs they are more robust and longer lasting then cds. And they where more portable.

That tape hiss brings back memories, but there is something I noticed having a direct side by side comparrison - I had never heard MiniDisc, but one of the complaints I remember hearing is that a lot of the dynamics were missing. Now I get it is also going through YouTube compression, but the MiniDisc, other than the the tape hiss not being there, seemed to be "brighter", almost like the bass and treble on the two machines were set differently - the MiniDisc sounded like bass was turned completely off and the treble was cranked up. This gave the impression of the music sounding "brighter" and "fuller", but when compared to the tape, you could really tell how much dynamic range was missing. I know Audio on MiniDisc is compressed, but I was not expecting that dramatic of a difference considering they were using ATRAC 4.5. I am not sure if it is the MiniDisc itself, or if the duplication house did some adjustments, or if it was the playback equipment, but yeah, there was certainly an audible difference (even without the tape hiss).

Hace un mes
gmshadowtraders

Could it possibly be because of the 'more natural' analogue to digital conversion? I suspect the minidisc copy was made going straight through SPDIF or coaxial digital connectors, so without any analogue anywhere in the chain. The tape instead went the analogue route, being tape of course. Maybe if the minidisc was also recorded the analogue way (because you can also do that on Sony MD hardware decks), then Sony's 24-bit A to D converters would be superior to the tape version?

I loved those things. I'm even thinking about buying a recording deck or even just a small one again. Minidiscs are the shit man! Lol. ;) Goodstuff TM.

That's something i don't understand. When people say that they love minidisc and miss them. When you love them why did you stop using them?
