I don't think a lot of "training" happens. It would be more accurately named "How To Tame Your Wild Dragon," or "How To Socialize Your Dragon Into Human Culture." But those don't sound quite as good, lol...

Did you even read the books? In the books dragons are clearly depicted as intelligent creatures, with their own language that even humans can learn. You also ignored evidence in the movies. Dragons are NOT lizards. They might resemble them, but they act more like cats or dogs. You even said that Hiccup eventually learns that dragons are basically glorified cats. Also, Toothless saved Hiccup, something that your average lizard, no matter how big, would never do. There's loads more evidence of emotions in the movies but everyone in the comments have probably covered that. It was probably jet lag and the fact that you watched this on a plane is the reason why this theory is very incorrect.

This is assuming that they are reptiles....just cause they look similar to reptiles doesn't mean they are....the writers used a combination of animals to create toothless......so the could have a more mammal like internal system.

This in no way is supposed to come across as hate, just an observation. When MatPat tackles theories/stories that have impacted so many people during childhood/adolescence that he himself only discovered in adulthood/recently, maybe there isn't a way to see how a theory such as this could be received negatively since it may have hit us in the childhood as they say but not him? I'm curious on people's thoughts on this.

Mmmkay, they AREN’T LIZARDS! They're Dragons Toothless is the most intelligent of out all the dragons due to him reading human emotions. Toothless knew Hiccup had that knife in his pocket and growled at him to drop and throw it with nod of Toothless’s head. Just because they don't speak doesn't mean Toothless doesn't understand what Hiccup is asking of him. Another example, when Hiccup kept trying to test out his glider, when Hiccup screams in terror Toothless ALWAYS goes after him, not because he's ”trained” because that's his best friend. Friends help one another no matter how stupid and dangerous their antics are. When Toothless found the Light Fury, he once again stood up on his hind legs (like a human) and danced around to impress her, which kind of freaked her out. Toothless drew a picture of Luna (Light Fury), and that's when Hiccup said: ”Oh, now you can draw...” Toothless is the most intelligent dragon in the franchise.

I appreciate the effort of your theory and keeping it realistic and scientifically accurate, however it seems you either didn’t notice it or you purposely didn’t include a “tiny” little detail that would destroy your entire theory, the dragons show intelligence and emotion some as intelligent as a child and thus conclude they have a different brain structure then lizards.

I do a lot of work with reptiles, and I can say a lot of what you said was accurate. One thing to add is reptiles DO have the ability to build a bind of trust. My blue tegu only lets me hold him, and other people make him very nervous. I’ve also seen the same with alligators I’ve studied and filmed I also work with wildcats, and I can say the dragons behavior matches them perfectly (which really is why a lot of stuff with the reptiles did apply lol)

Squish Scribbles

Hey, MattPatt! Amazing theory, but here's one of my own that builds off of it: What if they dragons in the movie aren't giant lizards? I mean, yes, that's what they look Like, and they have scales and all, but other than dinosaurs, there's no record of large lizards of that size. In the video, you talk about how these dragons don't behave like reptiles, because for the most part they just don't have the capacity to feel feelings. But, and stay with me here, domestic birds do. Think about it, of course there's the similarity that they both fly, but that's not where the similarities end. Most birds will be hostile when you first take them home, or at least scared. Professionals suggest that you ease it into schedule, give it food and water, keep it in its cage with no toys, and always keep it close to you when it's not in the cage. This is the fastest way to get a bird bonded to you, and it works. I wanna talk about some of those steps 1. Give it food and water. While this might seem like an obvious step, it's important that you are the provider and the bird knows that you're the one with the food. Kind of like how Hiccup brings fish for Toothless, so that Toothless knows he's the provider. 2. Keep it in a cage with no toys. The point of this is to make sure it doesn't get attached to it's cage, because *you* are the toy. You're it's source of enjoyment. This is pretty much what Hiccup does, keeping Toothless in his hole with water and food but nothing to do and no way to fly. Toothless has no choice but to see Hiccup as his source of enjoyment. 3. Keep it close to you when it's not in its cage. Hiccup obviously has a tight rein on Toothless when he's around, being the only way that Toothless can fly. Of course, I'm not saying that this is the most humane way of taming a bird, or a dragon, but it gets results. So based on the way it behaves, like a bird, and how it flies, we can take a guess that this dragon isn't a lizard. My theory is maybe it's an evolutionary in between on birds and dinosaurs. It still has the wings and the scales, but it has the hallow bones and the larger brain and perception. Thoughts?

Let's imagine that the dragons in the movie are a bit more intelligent than our reptiles , in trilogy we see many dragons showing emotions towards each other for example the big white dragon in HTTYD 2 willingly protecting other dragons as his children (note: something like this is never done in our reptiles they usually don't even care about their offspring let alone that of other species) My point is can you prove that something dark or ruthless is happening in series . Ps: love your theories but felt this one incomplete.

Okay defend time: hiccup grew up in a isolated town where *dragons* *steal* and *attack* the townsfolk, they then start to *attack* and *kill* dragons. Hiccup's morals are different at the *beggining* but soon feels bad that he tried to kill toothless. The damage is now done, but hiccup noticed topthless didn't kill him even though dragon are meant to "always go for the kill" so this just fascinated hiccup, who soon finds out toothless can't fly and wanted to help him. He didn't wanted to train him from the beginning. He just happened to befriend him and fly with him.

Well, one thing you got wrong. This is the same mentality that PETA used to create their Pokemon parody. And while they make a good point that many of the aspects of Pokemon seem/are cruel to animals on the surface, it becomes clear that the story is ultimately based on companionship between humans and animals. I'm not saying that some things in both Pokemon and HTTYD aren't at least slightly disturbing, I'm just saying that this theory seems to ignore the underlying message and just analyze what's on the surface. Not against MatPat or anything, I just highly disagree. Also, how do we know that HTTYD dragons can scale to regular earth reptiles? (I know Hiccup calls Toothless a "useless reptile" in the first movie, but I don't think that is solid enough.) That is an assumption that this theory heavily relies on. It is made pretty clear in the movies that dragons, unlike real-life reptiles, do seem to capable of emotion and relationships. You said it yourself Matpat! Glorified cats! Anyway, I just don't think that this theory has nearly as much weight to it as others. Also, wow, this theory made me go on a loooonggg rant for some reason. Just criticism and commentary, no hate.

Mat you do realise that you showed some pictures of lizards, reptiles and dragons from other TV shows and movies that do actually behave like cats and dogs. Heck, you even showed a picture of Rango, who behaves like a human. That chameleon from Tangled ( I can't remember it's name ) literally shows emotions like happiness, and since you used the pictures to prove a point, and compared HTTYD to real life training, that means that the pictures of characters who clearly showed emotions count as evidence. You debunked the whole theory yourself with the pictures.

Well if you think about it, it's like how horses have been domesticated by many races of humans. They "break" them. I put it in quotes because that's what it's called but they literally break them of their free will. It's really sad especially when you can "gentle" (again, what it's called) them and get them to trust you through a series of trust exercises which is what they're TRYING to show in httyd with Hiccup and Toothless but... they don't really do it so well since the catgon was injured lol (Sorry not sorry, that isn't a dragon lmao) They're also missing the fact that in order to train something, you have to domesticate it in some way first. Horses and dogs are easy to domesticate because they're herd animals. They rely on their families for survival so they're much more likely to rely on humans for the same if the situation arises. Dogs think of you as a pack member, horses think of you as a herd member, You're family, they trust you. It makes it easier to train them too since you can use that trust to make them do what you want. Notice cats aren't included in this because they domesticated themselves. They formed a symbiotic relationship with humans because of the need to eat and the incessant amount of rats around human dwellings during the time they were "domesticated". If those specific conditions hadn't been met, we wouldn't have pet cats because they would not have cared to follow us around and eat our pests.

The Dragons aren't like lizards. For one, you didn't even mention how EVERYBODY else trained they're dragon by other means than Hiccup did. And the dragons have been shown to show all sorts of emotions and even understand human language to a certain degree. Did you even watch the 3rd movie? Or any of them?
