Owen Jones meets Manuela Carmena | 'Politicians have lost the hearts of the people

  • Publicado el Hace 3 años

    Owen JonesOwen Jones

    duración: 8:00

Manuela Carmena is the mayor of Madrid. She's also a former member of the Spanish Communist party and she defended political dissidents under the dictatorship of General Franco. On my recent trip to Spain to follow Podemos on their election campaigns, I went to meet Manuela Carmena to get her view on Spanish politics and the discontent sweeping across Europe and the world.

She'll be a bloody good cook too, being Spanish. Love all the cosas para picar (things to nibble). Typically Spanish. The history of Spain in the C20th is traumatic. Many Spanish are still suffering from not having been able to bury their dead properly.

+James Bernardini In the seventies the Spanish Communist Party was the biggest party (outside the official one in power Falange de la JONS) in Spain, bigger than PSOE and other opposition parties. People looked up to them as the true warriors against the fascist regime. They had people in the factories, council assotiations, universities, etc. Their demonstrations were bigger and anybody else's. But they fucked up after backing down in all their ideological views and and accepting all treaties with transition goverment (Moncloa covenants in 77). Now they are a shadow of their past.

I love so much Manuela Carmena, authogh her work as mayor is being saboted by newspaper, Tv, Popular Party among others, the change is real, many things that seems so difficult have changed, evictions, relation, relation with bank, garbage company, even the very big debt is being reducing...This woman is showing us how everything can be changed when there is a good intentions. People who thinks in people. Manuela. I want to thank you for restored confidence in decency. (I would like to apologize for my shamefull English. I´m so sorry)

The title: "Politicians have lost the hearts of the people" is an understatement! Politicians and governments in general work for the elite, the banks and corporations that control them. Most of those who hold any sort of influential posts are bastards. Prime Ministers, Presidents are all bastards in most countries because they are all vassals to Washington. And who controls Washington? Why the belligerent neo cons who envision a one world government and an American world hegemony. Most western governments are corrupt to the bone and have nothing to do with democracy, but all to do with fascism.

I know she is the cleanEST politician ever! If PP could not find anything its because there is nothing. I am sure they went through everything... so... She is the BEST. She's without a doubt the most well prepared City Major in Spain, but she's getting too much negative attention and attacks by the right wing media and opposing political parties. I don't see her getting any more popular, al most everything she does is answered with law suits based on pre-supositions and false accusations to destroy her reputation, they'll try anything to make her look bad. Carmena's answer to these actions so far in a way have demonstrated that she's weak, she steps back as soon as fires are shot, (the ''titiriteros'' case and the Zapata drama are two prime examples), the roaring right wing takes advantage of that. Poltiics has no mercy and acting humble shows insecurity and that is a terrible mistake if you want to win. Donald Trump in the US knows that, and that's why he's so popular now, he doesn't back down when he's attacked, he makes of his controversy his own flag and weapon and he knows how to throw it back in response, if the left would've take notes on how the right acts in these situations we could be unstoppable.

Wow. Two of my favourites person in political scenario together. As spanish, I must say that Manuela has become the change that Madrid needed. A complete transparency, pure love, common sense, have turned Madrid into a great city again, after years and years of nefarious government (Partido Popular). For real, after all, we start to see light at the end of the tunel for people as amazing as Manuela Carmena is.

+boqueroningles She's a PP thief that happens to be less repulsive than Esperanza Aguirre, and hasn't been caught yet. Carmena is fully dedicated to the people, to be honest. After 20 years of extreme conservative policies, It's the first time Madrid's local government is actually doing stuff to help people rather than to help companies and important firms. It was outrageous when we found out the right-wing party had been stealing public money for ages without any kind of consequence. Wasting huge budgets on stupid things like changing bus stops just so they could get rid of homeless people or renaming squares after conservative politicians like the one renamed after Margaret Thatcher (What did 'Maggie' ever do to Madrid to deserve a square named after her?) Wonderful interview. I pretty much adore you both.
