This plan completely undermines the actual point of the US constitution and the ideals it was founded upon simply because people didn't what they wanted and have been throwing a seemingly endless tantrum since 2016, and to top this off this video is coming from a guy that doesn't even live in the US anymore and moved to UK for whatever reason. Like he said in this videos and many other videos the constitution and the way we elect presidents is to make sure no one state or group of stets can overpower every other state. This is why it is a bad idea, it will allow states with a greater population to have total and never ending control of the government and the people not being represented fairly. It is not so much sneaky as so much diabolical and wrong. Now that being said I am all for the electoral votes being spread evenly(ish) through the individual state for more equal representation.

I like how this plan not only makes the electoral college useless, but also the notion of being a republic of states.

This sounds pretty darn clever! Use the system against itself! Now, how about some equally clever strategies that will incentivize funding & resource allocation to tackle other major problems in / for America: climate change, obesity, under-employment, under-education, guns, racism, UBI, critical thinking, debt, irrational fear, lobbying, corruption...

0:49 there are states which probibit faithless electors. Also the electors who are chosen (and vote) are going to be electors specifically for a given presidential candidate, so they usually don't go against the popular vote in their state. Friendly reminded that the electors who vote are chosen by the people. Look at the presidential ballot, it says "presidential electors for ". Now all chosen electors do usually vote unanimously after some deliberation, but there's no way you'd get a state to flip simply based on the popular vote. If there's 12 democratic and 2 republican electors chosen, then those Democrat electors won't flip just because a republican has a majority of the vote.

That could be considered Evasion in law (Doctrine) : A Fraud (loophole in this case) through an act or legal business based on an existing regulation in order to achieve certain objectives, which, not being those of that standard. Also Justin Trudeau in 2019 even with just 33% and loosing the popular vote (conservatives won with 34%).

Nothing is perfect, I MEAN NOTHING! If there is a apparent flaw that everyone with common sense can see, FIX IT. The Constitution is a guide for how our country should be governed. GUIDES ARE UPDATED CONSISTENTLY TO BE RELEVANT AND CURRENT TO CHANGING SITUATIONS. If you don't think so use a road map from 1787 to get to a restaurant, hotel or movie theater and see how relevant that outdated map is!

The reason why certain candidates win the EC is and not the popular is because of one of the candidates ran up high margins in a few states NOT because of the “+2” vote factor which barely makes a difference.

Why not just go back to the first place in the race gets President and the runner up gets Vice President. That would make the voting system even more representational of the voting public and would stick a bit in the craw of current party politics. This would also work within the system of the electoral college. Just seems like the best course of action.

The reason why every state account separetly is pretty much why every european union member nation account separetly. America is an union of states, it's in the fucking name of the country, United States of America, it's not one state, but many, so it account the vote of every state, not the population as a whole.

And now there is a sneaky plan to destroy the "Compact". NH is voting to withhold reporting of their popular vote totals until after the electoral college meets, thus robbing any hope of knowing who won the popular vote. It would only take 2 or 3 states delaying their report to prevent the Compact from having any teeth. And there are no federal rules that require states to report the popular vote at all.

I just don’t like how all the electoral votes go to one candidate, who happens to have the majority. I feel that this gives too much power to a few states and individuals. Making it to where candidates only focus on swing states any way.

I honestly thing the electoral college makes hacking the election harder because you can easily re count 500 or so votes but it is impossible to re count 350 million votes.

I've struggled with this question a lot and still don't have an answer. Is it more fair for the interests of lower population states to weigh heavier? Or is it inherently unjust that the large population states have less say? I can easily see the arguments for both cases.

Lime Tea

After all, the president isn't the 'king' of the United States, his/her powers are very limited. It's not even a big deal.

Hace 5 días

The electoral college allows for different groups from states with different cultures and laws to have their voices heard. It unites the states the way the fed is supposed to manage the states.

Hace 5 días
Lime Tea
Lime Tea

I'd argue that the electoral college is better than the popular vote for that reason alone. I'm not even mentioning the fact that It's harder to steal an election because of this.

Hace 5 días
Lime Tea
Lime Tea

In this YouTube video, it's made to look like the founding fathers didn't believe we could manage ourselves. That isn't true. They wanted an intellectually diverse fed so we could get a president that best represents the United States as a whole so that your state isn't ignored by the fed.

So what is even holding this National Popular Vote Interstate Compact together? There doesn't seem to be anything in there actually enforcing it. Lets say that one state that signs it has a massive landslide vote for the less popular candidate, but now they are obligated to put all of their EC votes into someone nearly no one in their state wants. The state is humiliated, the citizens are in an uproar, politicians fear for their jobs, etc etc and basically no one in that state is happy. But if they break the NPVIC what happens to them? The votes just go to the correct candidate, and even if they still lose they still have some dignity. What can the other states even do? Sue them? They can't really do anything. The federal government would definitely side with the state that broke the NPVIC agreement because they correctly used their constitutional rights to use their EC votes as they pleased, and they would never support some sneaky pact designed to usurp the EC. Attempting any kind of punishment would cause the feds to step in and even if they couldn't destroy the pact entirely they can definitely ruin any reason to hold to it. If this thing actually got enough members it would just create a ridiculous mind game of whether or not enough states will even follow it, and that just messes everything up even more. And if someone out there actually believe politicians will hold to some gray area agreement with no repercussions when it could be seriously detrimental them and their careers then... I don't know what to say. Seriously, this whole idea is just stupid and belongs in the trash. If something truly must be done then just agree to make it so the EC votes are handed out proportionally in each state for each party involved. Problem solved. tldr - This idea is dumb. Allocate votes proportionally per state instead.

The reason why the current system is good: It was in this video:... It gives more power to those who own land, those who have more responsibility, those whom without nothing in this country would run. A very wise element either implemented with extreme foresight, luck or the help of God. That's why the USA has been the most stable country for the last 200 years. The many who have a lot to loose have a lot to say.

What penalty does a signatory state face if it does not in fact abide by the Compact, when the time comes? What enforcement mechanisms exist? I could easily envision the whole experiment falling apart, if ever put to the test. I'm not taking a stance one way or the other on the idea, but it's astounding that this very ambitious plan has made it this far.

For example, 62% of voters in my state voted for Trump. People here would have rioted if *all* of their electoral votes had instead gone to Clinton. (Of course, for this very reason, my state isn't clamoring to join the Compact.)
