The truth is alot of people are able to work but choose not to, they can have a better lifestyle sat at home. It's not fair on the people who really need it. I know disabled people who have been working all thier lives, have bought and payed for thier own house aswell as raised a family. It's all to do with what you expect in life, if you were brought up on benifits you automatically think your entitled to them.

if it's costing councils more money because people can't pay the rent, can somebody explain to me how the fuck universal credit 'saves money'? it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that it's a massive scam and a way to save money for the government, which pays for MPs bonuses, travel and eating expenses, not forgetting their free housing and massive tax rebates etc, they are taking money from the poorest people in society and funnelling it straight to the top.

Unfortunately, the system is now set up so that you have to be in touch online every day with your job coach. As libraries (if you can find one where you live) are not open on Sundays (and in many areas on other days too), this means that either you have to pay for an internet connection or a suitable mobile 'phone. I am guessing that it might work out cheaper to go the 'phone route, as you need a phone anyway in case the jobcentre are trying to contact you and it has the advantage of being portable.

I'm sick of this bleeding-heart Liberal propaganda. Why should I, aged 64yrs and still working; be taxed into needless poverty, in order to carry all these malingering scroungers ?? After fifty plus years of increasingly draconian Socialism, the only thing it's resulted in is more poverty, so the simple lesson has to be; return to the old Biblical morality:- " if any would not work, neither should he eat." - 2 Thessalonians 3:10.

+cedric worthington broadaxe Completely agree that there is shocking wastage. The NHS is a case in point, where there are too many expensive pen pushers at the expense of frontline staff, drugs and equipment. There is no joined up thinking. The drug that I helped to develop, that work was half funded by the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust. Part way through clinical trials Wellcome was taken over by Glaxo, who did not want to continue funding our project as they saw the product as being a competitor to drugs that they produced. They stopped funding us and the Medical Research Council would not pick up the other half of the bill. So all of our cell lines were sold off via the British Technology Group. Now, 1.2ml of this drug costs £7045 and the other drug whose cell line that I cloned costs £419 per 100mg, because they are sold by big pharma. I find it immoral that many people worked very hard to discover these drugs and we all worked way over a 37 hour week, for these drugs whose discoveries were funded by the British taxpayer are not available on the NHS. Why would you not have a parallel drug industry, where drugs discovered in MRC funded labs are produced free of charge for our own NHS and all the quantity that is produced in excess of our needs are sold to other countries with the profits being ploughed back into the NHS and further research? Could it possibly be that too many politicians have personal interests in big pharma? Two friends of mine are Cambridge graduates who have set up a charity for non-neurotypical individuals who are unemployed. The idea is that lots of autistic individuals are really good with computers and as they are unemployed they could be using that time productively by receiving some free training that would get them into a job. However, their efforts are being completely thwarted by the Jobcentre's completely beaurocratic and inflexible approach to 'conditionality'. Yet the crazy rules mean that people with degrees are being sent on basic numeracy and literacy courses that are a complete waste of taxpayer's money. Now whilst I wouldn't say that my writing or mathematics are perfect, they go way beyond the crap taught in these courses, you would have thought that they might have figured that if you have worked in a lab that you do not need to be taught how to do percentages. It is yet another example of the non joined up thinking and money wasting that goes on. Sense just does not come into it.

+Banana, thank you for an interesting reply, most of which I completely agree with. At an individual level, I've no problem with my tax money being used to support genuine individuals such as yourself when they fall upon hard times. You (like myself) have paid into the system and are entitled to support from it as/when required. My problem is with the whole rotten Marxist/Socialist State system in it's entirety, because it's now clearly failed everywhere it's been tried (from Lenin's Soviet Union through Castro's Cuba to modern-day Guatemala ) for more than a century. Using your own circumstances as an example; would you have been better off if you'd simply kept as personal savings that £75,000 you were forced to hand the State as taxation ? The answers obviously a resounding " Yes ! " because when hard times struck you'd have had those savings to fall back on. The picture becomes worse however, when you realise how institutionally incompetent/corrupt/inefficient the State Welfare System really is; with only £150 in every £1,000 raised by taxation actually being handed back to the citizenry as/when needed. The other £850 in every £1,000 being consumed within the System itself by staff wages/pension costs, building/technology maintenance costs, bureaucratic administrative costs etc.... etc.... etc.... With such an appalling wastage rate, it would clearly be in the taxpayers interest to let them keep the money they earn during the good times to use as/when hard times arrive.

We all pay tax and National Insurance to cover us in times of need and those who are unable to work. There are some people who are simply scroungers, but many are in situations that are not of their own making and no one should be punished with poverty for that. During my working life, I paid £75,000 in tax. I was with my husband for over 8 years when I had our child and within 10 months he was off. I divorced him and was forced to pay him £80,000 and could no longer afford to live where my industry as a research scientist is based. It was then found that my son had a condition called Deficits in: Attention; Motor co ordination and Perception with Pragmatic Disorder, he went on to be diagnosed with autism. As you can imagine I now live in a cheaper area in the back of beyond. The Jobcentre has been on my case and have asked me to investigate work. It would be impossible to make work pay here. Care for my son would cost at least £10.30 an hour, as insurance for childcarers demands that disabled children are looked after on a 1:1 basis by a suitably qualified carer. He would require at least 4 hours a day care and that is just during term time, in the holidays it would be more like 10 hours a day. You can see that by adding in travel costs of 45 miles a day, that actually it would leave us with nothing to live on. It is way cheaper for the state to pay the benefits that it pays me then to pay for my child to be in care. If my benefits were stopped, I would have no choice but to put my child into the care system, as I would not be able to realistically work, for one thing I am too knackered! As a carer, I am a member of various groups that have bought me into contact with foster parents and social workers, many children in the care system have disabilities, some of them not as bad as my own son and with two parents to care for them. The basic pay for a foster carer is around £450 per week per child and that is for non-complex cases, carers of children with disabilities are paid even more. That is not too mention the costs of social workers and reports and care hearings in the courts. I can tell you that every time that I stepped foot in court during my divorce it cost me £3000-£4000. In care hearings, both the state and the parents are represented by legal teams that are funded from the public purse. Very expensive. Similarly, if you stop people's benefits and they become desperate they are apt to turn to crime, not from greed, but from need. Who wants prostitutes, drug dealers and muggings on their street and who wants to pick up the resultant policing, court and prison costs, not me or you I would bet given that these functions cost a lot more than simply paying a fair system of benefits. Do I feel guilty about claiming benefits? No, I do not. Not only did I pay indirectly into the system, but during the time that I worked I was involved in the development of one drug now on the market and I cloned a cell line that also produces a drug that is used for arthritis and Crohn's disease that is also on the market. Later in my career, whilst working with a group who were trying to develop an autologous blood device, I suggested an alternative development. Essentially, the other scientists were in the process of developing a novel aerosol. It worked like this: blood shed during surgery was collected and kept in the bottom of the aerosol where it was kept liquid by balls of agar with heparin attached to them. When surgery was finished and the patient sewn up, the wound would then be sprayed, the blood would pass through a second stage where it would mix with a proprietary coagulant and it would then form an immediate protective scab of the patients own blood over the wound site. My development was to suggest that if we could get the proprietary coagulant to stick irreversibly and stabily to agar, then we could make sheets of agar and attach the coagulant and use it as a dressing to stop bleeding. As far as I am aware, it is not licensed for general use as yet, but it has been used on the battlefield to good effect and apparently, a helicopter medic had some packs when he was called to an incident where a tree surgeon had accidentally cut his own throat and the dressing saved his life. Austerity was caused by the taxpayer bailout of the bankers that unwisely invested in the subprime market. I do not see any bankers paying for their mistakes in the way in which the poor of this country have paid. Not to mention the rich individuals and companies that do business here, but do not pay tax here. Maybe it is time that you did not swing your axe so broadly and took a surgical swing at the real cause of the problems. The Tory party and it's media mouthpieces are only too happy for the poor of this country to take the blame for their poor management whilst they and their cronies line their pockets at our expense. Too many sheeple buy the lies.

George Carlin said about the American System which mostly applies to Europe now too. 'I am talking about the real owners the big wealthy business interests that control all things and make all the important decisions. Forget the politicians. The politicians are there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice, you don't, you have no choice. You have owners, they own you, they own everything, they own all the important land, they own and control the corporations they have long paid for the Senate, Congress, they got the judges in their back pocket. And they own all the media so they control information. They got you by the balls'. They buy the politicians to get what they want. And soon they will sell what is left of the social housing in Britain. I have no doubt these people would rebuild the gas factories if they could. We are dealing with pure evil and we need a revolution.

Lack of budgeting skills are not taxpayers or benefit agencies fault. Being responsible is a duty. Missing appointments is not the taxpayer or governments fault. Sanctions are a fit punishment for fecklessness.

Hace 5 días
Banana

It is not lack of budgeting skills, it is lack of money. The conditionality part of UC means that unemployed people have to check in daily online with their job coach. Libraries do not open on Sundays, that is if you have a library in the town, which means either having an internet connection or a sophisticated enough 'phone. Which all costs money. No one is saying that there should not be sanctions, but they need to be fair and proportionate to the offence that has been committed. After all, in the courts fines have to be proportionate to the offender's income and an offence there has to be proved with a reasonable degree of certainty. At the moment there is a sliding scale of sanctions of: 3 weeks; 3 months and 3 years. They sanction for anything including your mother or child dropped dead on your signing day or you did not look for work on the day of their death. Ridiculous. If people can prove that they have a valid reason for missing an appointment or not searching for enough jobs, why give them extra hardship. Anyone sanctioned for 3 months is going to find it nigh on impossible to survive and they are likely to commit crime and this will stretch the police and judicial system and in all likelihood that will cost the public purse more than simply paying them a reasonable level of benefits in the first place.

what is so blinking stupid is making poor people wait months with no income to get universal credit. by then, they are behind in rent and other bills so they will never catch up. this is just criminal. and this whole thing of sanctions, that too is beyond stupid. so you dock money to punish them, putting them behind again in rent and bills. poor people cant live like this.

Great Britain is a fantastic country, I have paid tax since 1983 and only in the last few months due to ill health have claimed state money, first time on the system and Universal credit is awesome, bloody marvellous it is, money for nothing and your chicks for free. I have got so used to being a state bum in just 3 months I dont want to go back to work, been a worker all me life from 16 on farm and sometimes held down 2 jobs to pay the bank bond mortgage . Luckily I bought me current house 19 years ago, when the market was low, dirt cheap, before Tony Blair flooded us with millions of aliens that pushed up rents. Cleared my house loan years ago, that was priority number one. Now I go to hospital and have had loads of blood tests, MRI and cameras everywhere probing me guts. Only cost me £2 for hospital parking. Fantastic NHS. If this treatment was USA I would be dead from debt. Then me little boy goes to good school and it costs me nothing. Brilliant eh. Got me Thai wife a British passport, ages ago when it was cheap n easy. Passport worth more than gold, look how many £ millions you get back for having it. Cracking country. Eh Now if I was living back in Africa where I was born , I would be in shit street as the black governments dont care for poor white old farmers like I was years ago in Zimbabwe.

Ok, so people who private rent, work full time, have kids to take care of and don't claim any benefits have to budget to pay their rent, food and bills from a monthly paycheck so why shouldn't people on benefits? That's the real world! People who work don't have the luxury of getting random amounts of money every week or so! When your working 40hr weeks for minimal wage you budget! That's life!

Yes, but you have to have a realistic figure to budget with. One of the things that really costs is the conditionality thing. With UC you have to check in daily, online with your job coach, this means that you either need an internet connection or a fancy 'phone, as libraries (if you can find one in your locality) are not open on Sundays. Broadband and fancy 'phones are the last saps on your money that you actually need.

The logical way: you send in an application, they check your identity, work out what you're entitled to and you're paid what you're entitled to. The Great British way; chuck millions of pounds into a new benefits system with no clue as to the cost of living or the resources you need, then you scratch your head because you've no idea what you're doing, then when it goes wrong, you scratch your head some more, so you spend a few more million pounds trying to improve the service but you still have no idea what went wrong in the first place - so you fuck up even more. While you're scratching your head, 2 more million people are now using food banks since the day before, because of the fuck ups you can't admit you made, so you penalise those people by driving people into further debt because you're British, too proud to admit you don't have a brain and you're better off scrubbing toilets in Maccys, but because we hate to "offend" people, you can't be sacked.....

Get the book "The Great Tax Robbery". What has happened is that the Tories have built a tax-free welfare state for the rich. Every HMRC employee earns many times what he/she is paid because they collect taxes avoided by dodgers. The Tories have cut their number. In the 'bad' old days, if you were in a dodgy tax scheme, and they caught you they would penalise you heavily. Now, all that happens is that you pay the tax and it's all forgotten. Selling council houses is a Tory whizz to get people who buy their council homes to think that they are capitalists now and so vote Tory. Selling council houses has been a disaster for working people. In the 'bad' old days we had enough cash to pay for road maintenance, enough police, unemployment pay, libraries, medicine and a working legal system. You need to understand that there is no money for these things because the Tories are happy to export our taxes. Our country is decaying around us and they have distracted us with the Brexit nonsense. The Tories will get us to leave Europe and then they will have the all the power they need to really screw the British working classes. You can see Boris and Moggy drooling over the prospects.

A carefully specifically developed scheme to squeeze, stress, then squeeze some more. . .gauge how much the scroates can take. . .so as to normalize their increased despair and stress. . . then squeeze some more and stress even more, and then again, see how much these scroates can take. . .did they break? Some? yes. All? No. . . Okay. . .are they complaining? Yes. Are they organizing a revolution? No. Are they preoccupied with jumping through our impossible hoops to conform to our impossible to meet tasks we designed for them? Yes. . All of them? No. .some have been broken. Enough are broken? No. . Then by definition, they can tolerate more stress? Yes. Okay. . .squeeze. . . The conservative scheme along with this imposed austerity which they themselves will never suffer being subject to is a plan to see how close to the margins it is to push the resident population so as to have all their energies front and center focus on simple animal survival. This will crush the idea of aspiration, expectation, accountability of the authorities as they will be as lords and the people as obligatory peasants, all the while the resources, wealth, power, growth, aspirational dreams will be the purview of the few. . .those very few that actually are responsible for coming up with this demonic scheme to have the people dance to. The fuckers are playing games with your very lives, and it seems to be amusing to them.

Most of these people don't know how to budget...so food banks and cash in hand...What they are spending free benefit monies on. How is this government fault ?

My mother is disabled because of her back so its rare shes able to stand up for long once a day, never mind walk far which usually leads her to not being able to move until next week. She is really suffering through this too, we live in the middle of no where and she no longer has any mobility given to her and she is also constantly worried because her payments get delayed and stuff. The entire system makes me sick tbh ;/

Moral of the story is: prioritize your spending and pay the important things first. From what I can tell, the gist of the video is that too many people are spending rent money which they are given for free, on other things, thereby risking eviction. So It's their own fault if they waste their rent money lol. No sympathy.

Sooo everyone else is capable of paying their rent/mortgage on time but for some reason, these people can't...but it's ok because of their just no good with money? Is this a joke? I "don't know how to budget"? How hard is it? Make sure at the very least your accommodation is sorted before anything else.

Forever Ballin' it’s not as simple as that. Rent is increased every month and wages aren’t to properly match them. The new system wouldn’t effect someone who can afford to pay for things so maybe you simply wouldn’t understand what it’s like to struggle to the penny in the UK. It’s gruesome.

My partner is a disabled war veteran that suffers from Ptsd and was forced to quit his job due to his disability. We as a couple get £906 as a couple and our private rent is £650 which leaves us £256 to pay all other bills and eat.... We are ruined... serve your country for 10 years cripple yourself and get chucked in the gutter by that government you protected with your life.
