I usually love what John Oliver has to say, but hearing him try to defend socialism by referring to Venezuela as a stand-alone case of mismanagement is quite an ignorant thing to say. You can’t talk about Venezuela without referring to Cuba, Bolivia, Argentina or the latin american socialist movement that has been plagued by corruption and delusions of power. And you can’t talk about that and not refer to the atrocities committed historically by socialist dictators throughout the world who thought they were doing good and were the voice of the people. This report is accurate on the Venezuela situation, but that is only part of a much larger problem: socialism. I’d love to know what countries he’s talking about when he says “there are plenty of socialist countries that don’t have these problems”.

Sweden = Socialism + Democracy Venezuela = Socialism + Dictatorship That's the difference! Venezuela is a dictatorship - not a democracy! Way before the oil price drop of 2014, Venezuela was crumbling when Hugo Chavez was crowning himself as dictator. I had initially admired his work for the poor, thinking that he would replicate the Nordic model of democratic socialism. I was wrong! Chavez closely aligned himself with Cuba (a dictatorial country), signing very preferential oil agreements with Fidel Castro. Crime ran rampant due to a breakdown of law and order. Opponents were persecuted with surgical precision, and election results became highly suspect. Chavez eliminated term limits for presidency so he could rule indefinitely. Result: Millions of people fleeing Venezuela for their lives! I grew up working class in NYC, a mecca for immigrants from all over. I never once met a Venezuelan until I went to an expensive college in Boston. Now I'm meeting Venezuelans from all socioeconomic strata who share frightening news from there. Drivers don't stop at red lights at night because gangs bash windows to murder them and steal their cars. Former Miss Venezuela 2004 was killed that way. Criminals rampage with impunity because the police don't investigate. Extreme food shortages there constitute a humanitarian crisis. Thank you, John Oliver, for shedding light on this dire situation! I'm strongly in favor of democratic socialist policies such as universal healthcare and free higher education as implemented in bonafide democracies like Canada, Western Europe, and Japan. However, if you defend a dictatorship that perverts these ideals under the guise of socialism, then you are betraying those very ideals! Be honest and condemn this horrific regime for what it truly is - starting with Chavez!

Jesus Christ, the left are even more scummier than I thought. I mean, they aren't even centrists who believe in capitalism with a mixed economy for necessary public services and a safety net for the unemployed, they are fucking praising all out command economy - marxist style socialism at this point. as scary as it is, its also great. the left going this far LEFT just means they will fall off the spectrum into the dustbin of history and grant Trump his 2nd term. John Oliver is ACTUAL pathetic human scum. I thought these guys were supposed to be comedians, these late-night hosts are just 100% political activists now. John Oliver should be doing his show on MSNBC. They make John Stewart look like a republican.

Socialism is bad. There’s no way around it. Any country that has fully adopted socialism has crumbled. And those that many say are socialist countries (Sweden) have proven to have a market system. Don’t get fooled. Take an intro to Econ class and you’ll understand

This video is one of the most accurate efforts on explaining Venezuela's crisis I have seen by a foreigner (I lived there 23 years, 20 of which were under this regime, so I should know). And, yes, I'm one of those that had to flee the country too. If you think this is propaganda, just go to Venezuela... You have no idea how lucky you are, to be able to go to your local grocery store and have the possibility of buying bread (an amount for the day only) without having to get in a line for 2 hours, getting tampons or period pads without having to go to 10 drugstores and having to struggle to find money to pay them because they're so expensive. You don't get random calls from prison bosses (and I mean, prisoners who lead the prison) trying to extort you by threatening to kill your family because they have people outside that put their eyes on you because you have a somewhat "comfortable" life. I guess that you haven't been pointed at your head with a gun while waiting on a red light so they can take you and you car, and kidnap you to ask for ransom (common practice over there). Or maybe you have seen your grandma fade and lose her sight to glaucoma because her medicine (easily found in other countries) can't be found in any drugstore, and hear her cry because she can't do anything about it. Never mind the people who have cancer or diabetes and are dying because they can't find the treatment that would be easily accessible in any other country, including the US (expensive, but it's there if you can afford it). Maybe you have also had to wipe your butt with napkins you had to take from your workplace, because -guess what- you can't find either toilet paper nor napkins in the super market. Living there beats your dignity up so much that there's a point where you start dying inside, and little by little, it never stops. You feel hopeless and powerless everyday and depression has become a common situation for a lot of people. So I ask you politely, please, don't tell people that suffer this everyday that you suffer the same or more, because that's just disrespecting their huge effort to try and survive one day at a time. Life there is inhumane.

For those who think socialism is communism. Here's some education on the subject from a socialist in Belgium, a left-leaning country in the EU. Socialism is a form of government ideology where every citizen pays tax dependant on their income. The higher, the more you pay, the lower, the less. This money goes into funding health care, transport, retirement funds, infrastructure, unemployment and general public services. This assures that even people who have a low income can afford doctors or medical bills, that the elderly don't starve or waste away if they run out of money and that many essential services are sufficiently funded to keep running. Eventually, what you pay into this system, returns to you as inevitably, your parents and later yourself - or even your kids - might have doctors costs, need retirement funding or low cost house cleaning aids, nurses and so on. You might pay 1000$/year into the system but as a result, a doctor visit costs maybe 2$, essential medicine might be 5$ and many services are free of cost. Also, if you have no income and receive direct monetary aid in any way, you must prove that there is a valid reason for this, through doctors testimonies, examinations or other evidence that you literally cannot work. If you fail to do this, your income steadily decreases and eventually you receive barely enough to live or even nothing. That is to discourage abuse of the system by people unwilling to contritube to it. Eventually, they're cut loose. Communism on the other hand is a somewhat proven disfunctional model where the state owns all businesses and money and everybody essentially works for the state, getting payouts that vary depending on how much the state values that sector. It is a rather bad system that has failed in many occasions and even in countries that wear the label 'communist' it actually means capitalist dictatorship like China. On topic, Venezuela seems to have shifted from socialist to dictatorship entirely, as the state doesn't provide any service. If it WAS socialist, they would provide food packs.

1. Northern European countries are not socialist countries. They are capitalist economies with high individual taxation and a welfare state. 2. Northern European countries are quickly losing their competitive edge compared to the rest of the worldand are seriously considering lowering taxes and rolling back the welfare system in order to avoid economic stagnation and collapse on the long term. 3. Venezuela is a real socialist country. The economic situation in Venezuela is the inevitable consequence of hard socialist economic policies and the abolition of private property. 4. Cultural Marxism and the far left ideology is the greatest threat facing the Western world at the moment and willprobably cause the terminal decline of Western Europe and North America, further accelerating the rise of China and East Asia to the top of the world order. 5. Communist China has long since realized the total failure of the utopian dream of the socialist economic system and as fully embraced capitalism. They are communist in name only.

Eating rabbits may seem inhumane to us because that's not our culture, but in other parts of the world it's equally (if not more) "inhumane" to eat cows, and in a lot of places eating any meat at all. Over here in America we're barbarically consuming unfathomable numbers of mammals all the time, that's hypocritical and ignorant to paint Venezuelans in a bad light for eating rabbits, especially when there's a food shortage.

Yes i seen the video of the Empire files and yes, they have footage from telesur network which has base of operations in Caracas, but Telesur is not venezuelan state media, it is a multinational organization supported by institutions in Bolivia, Uruguay, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Cuba, Sure they have a bias toward's leftist coverage but in this world of political polarization in the media, is hard to tell who is telling the truth. Because i dont disregard the arguments made by venezuelans who loath the Chavez and Maduro regime, but there are equally as much people in Venezuela, who revere both leaders. It really strikes me that people blame socialism for venezuela's economic woes, yet it's far more complicated than that. I live in Puerto Rico and currently it is a capitalist playground for the ultra rich who evict people from their homes and bomb our islands for target practice forcing them to live a decrepid and depressing life unemployed or ona low wage job in the US yet i dont hear that capitalism is the problem, Its trully sad what is going on in Venezuela, yes, but socialism is not the culprit.

Either the US wants a socialism or capitalism since Americans don't want to be smart enough to accept the balance. We practice both capitalism in markets and trade but socialism with healthcare and education. But the only people that would bitch and complain about one or the other depends on how much money is in their bank accounts. But you could become extremist and throw the idea of balance right out of the fucking window. Hell... why don't people leave to bring down the amount of people in the country for better distribution if you hate it so much?!!! Ugh. No one wants to pay taxes or have corporations pay their fair share but everyone wants free shit. Great. America is one of the richest countries in the world and people are still stupid when it comes to economics.

Before he died things were already were terrible and Venezuelans in desperate conditions. Chavez was a very bad person, set on absolut power. Communism was initially about a quest for the ideal society; the dictatorship of the proletariat was intended as phase 1 of that quest, which would ultimately lead to the ideal communist society that has never actually been created on earth because, sadly, the dictators of the proletariat decided they liked dictating a little too much and just froze things there. So people explored other forms of socialism which often incorporate elements such as a democratic government, while still retaining core ideals such as caring for every member of one's society to the best of one's ability. Sadly, it sounds as though Venezuela's government has been trying to force a system into existence which attempts to pull money out of thin air. A diversified economy with strong production and provision of domestic goods and services, as well as exports of various specialty goods, would perhaps be a good idea; simply printing more money, on the other hand, creates no additional value, so the money loses value as its quantity increases... all of which may be vaguely described as an attempt at socialism, perhaps, but a poorly managed one. The way to win an economic war of any kind, surely, is to build up a strong economy and provide as much as possible for the people of one's country, from one's own country? Possibly importing key resources in order to refine them into advanced goods that can be sold at a profit. I suppose historically, socialist and "socialist" states have been a bit bad at the whole "how an economy works" things... but I feel this is more a consequence of narrow-mindedness and lack of big picture thinking than of socialist ideals themselves.

Olive  Hi again, sorry, I was kinda in a rush and couldn't answer earlier. Regarding the small number of pharmaceutical companies, that's based on this show specifically, but most companies have a page on wikipedia, and there, very often, you can find the parent company. Now, I'm not entirely sure which type of ownerships those are, because I'll freely admit, I'm not an economist and I'm not very well educated on the topic. That being said, I'd assume it was a mix of complete ownership like in the case of PMI and Marlboro (where Marlboro is just a name of a brand of cigarettes) and having subsidiaries, like PMI's RBM which in turn are responsible for producing Rothmans, Next and Davidoff to name a few. I assume the subsidiary is a company you have majority ownership of stock, and therefore you earn money off it's revenue, while also owning the company and having a say in how things are to be done. So, with a lot of brands, I find myself taking a look at the parent company, and the parent company of the parent company, and so on, only to find, that "oh, hey, that's also owned by Mondelez". Now, do I know exactly how that ownership works? No, I don't, not for certain, but I think that the parent company appoints members of the board, by having ownership of majority of the company's stock, receives benefits from the sales of brands belonging to the daughter company etc. Here, I'd have to invite you to take a look at a couple of brands of drugs and go up from there, to learn what company is at the top of that chain, and you'll find, that it's most often owned, for example, by GlaxoSmithKline or Pfizer to name examples. This makes the ley public, such as myself think that they are making a choice between two brands, and therefore, two companies, until they find that no, the choice isn't really that much of a choice, because those brands all belong to the same parent company. That's especially surprising when you're a smoker and you find a brand that suits your tastes, but oops, it's actually owned by PMI as well! You're not supporting your favourite company, in the end your money does in part end in the pockets of the PMI executives. At least with the oligarchal American IPs (internet providers) it's clear, that you don't have a choice. Brands and subsidiary companies, and all that, the lay don't realize that in the end that's not making a choice either. Whoo, that's one thing out of the way. I'm glad you're enjoying the discussion, and if I taught you a bit about the AI (I'll get into more soon, because it's hard to ban "certain types of AI" for reasons I'll explain later in this definitely overlong comment), then I'll be glad if you taught me a bit about economy and business as related to the above. I also love learning new things, but there is only so many hours in a day, and being in IT and still being a student I often find myself being well educated on IT, but definitely lacking knowledge in other aspects of, well, knowledge. So, I'd be glad if you provide me with kind of quick rundown, as I try to with my replies on AI for example - I don't get into the greatest of detail, but you get the gist of it, and that's what matters. Onto the next one! As to the criticism of welfare and your concerns starting with 3: indeed, the welfare would need to be localization dependant, and being a landlord I know first-hand, that costs of living vary wildly not only from city to city, but even from one part of the city to next. Hell, some people in Silicon Valley are struggling despite making insane amounts of money due to the fact, that it's so expensive to live in and around SV. That I absolutely get. What I would imagine is a uniform housing costs in the suburbs, building more housing projects for low-income families. That way their rent is taken care of by default and is simply zero.. Points 1 and 2, in turn, well... I won't lie, I don't have a lot of experience in how the US is run. My country used to be a socialist country, and the fact, that a couple companies belong to the government is nothing surprising. The funding for that welfare would need, therefore, in the US come from the huge companies. I won't lie, I'm not sure how you guys could get that recognized as a normal behaviour. Listen, I have psych issues, had to take medicine or I'd spiral into a panic attack and I'm kinda drowsy and my eyes are closing on their own (yeah, it's benzodiazepines . I'll be back with some more on AI. Sorry, but maybe that's for the best, I wrote a huge comment already. I'll try to write tomorrow. Cheers, Olive, I'm enjoying this conversation too, sorry I can't complete this comment today, just an unfortunate fact of life for me.

Question though, are we discussing a universal income for everyone that replaces welfare services or simply an income based welfare system that is streamlined into one program instead of several? Vox seemed to argue for universal income but suggested it should be income based, which is more similar to current welfare. Not exactly universal if it's based on income. https://www.nationalpriorities.org/budget-basics/federal-budget-101/spending/ https://fee.org/articles/why-socialism-failed/ http://thefederalist.com/2015/08/11/scandinavia-isnt-a-socialist-paradise/ https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/01/business/economy/universal-basic-income-poverty.html https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/universal-basic-income/ https://socialwelfare.library.vcu.edu/recollections/current-issues-and-programs-in-social-welfare/

Back in those days (3 months ago) when venezuelas inflation forecast for 2018 were only 13,000 % not 1,000,000 % Godspeed for your country to replace that hell of a leader you´re punished with.

It´s just a matter of time before US says that Venezuela, the largest oil reserve in the world, is in need for freedom. They´re just letting current Venezuelan leaders make that claim easier. It is true that Venezuela is fucked up, I´m not deniying that, but in that graphic where they showed all the countries fucked by US, they forgot to put all of Latin America there.

And again: A asocialist state that failed. Just name me 1 socialist state that did well. Chaves spend the money of the rich and the poor and when marudo was in power there was just nothing left. All businesses were in the hand of the state, therefore not paying taxes but requireing money. Nothing new and we sould finally learn the lesson.

It's amusing to me that, almost universally, folks turn on someone who says something they don't agree with. Humans are garbage, and I hope we cease inflicting ourselves on the universe soon. A nuclear war, for instance. Shouldn't take the global ecosystem too long to recover from that, especially if homo sapiens are out of the picture.

Did he just say that a woman, who appears to be high as shit, told the reporter that she has worms in her brain, and that he thinks that's a sick burn? Did I misinterpret that?

Venezuela, or the officials are not against Capitalism. As the video, establishes, Venezuela is very corrupt. When Chavez was alive, he used to come to Disneyland, bought high-fashion-branded apparel, and pay for Justin Bieber concerts to his daughters. While, he always protested that Capitalism, and be rich was bad. Also, one of his or still officials, was bashing against Capitalism, while wearing a LV tie. I know this information from a very famous Venezuelan Youtuber, living in Argentina. He knows all the batshit in Venezuela. To all the Spanish-speaking folks out there, visit his channel Drossrotzank and look for "Dross Norcorea," pretty good information there. Possibly he has English captions as well

John Oliver must learn that the Jimmy Carter institute ranked the Venezuela election system the best and most secured in the world..while united slaves of america is way below down...how is possible that the wealthiest oil reserve country in the world is fucked up so hard? And the second wealthiest oil country,Saudi Arabia (people there also fucked up) is the closest ally of britain and usa with billions and billions spend on weapons bought? Of course the united slaves of america are to blame for venezuela...lets hope Petro will save Venezuela..

This is just ridiculous. You should be ashamed of yourself for making a joke of a country ruined by corruption and Socialism. Even when the Government has the best oil industry in the world it still cannot prop up Socialism. It does definitely show you that Socialism always leads to corrupt governments and starving citizens. The last several elections in Venezuela have been rigged. John Oliver should be forced to go live in Venezuela for the propaganda bullshit he is pushing here and his pathetic jokes.

Please enlighten me ... does John Oliver really believe what he is saying or reading??? How is it possible that he believes that a 1.000.000% PNB is mismanagement? How does he believe that the population eating rats and catching doves in the middle of Caracas is mismangement? I don´t get it and dont understand how he can make comedy of millions of people starving !!!!! John Oliver shame on you .......
