Honda has announced the closure of its Swindon car plant.
Subscribe to our channel here: goo.gl/31Q53F
The company has announced it is taking its manufacturing elsewhere causing the loss of 3,500 jobs.
The company has said that Brexit is not to blame - and conversely, employment figures nationwide are at a record high, so what's causing the move? Our economics editor Ben Chu went to find out what the move will mean for the British car industry.
In the studio, Kirsty Wark is joined by Faiza Shaheen, director of the think tank CLASS and economist George Magnus.

What I find amazing is that none of the people commenting here saying the same nonsense about trade. Because UK imports more than they export EU, so EU needs UK more than the other way around. Listen and understand what I’m writing now!!! UK HAVE ONLY 1 THING THEY CAN CONTROL IN REGARDS TO ITS TRADE AFTER BREXIT! THEIR IMPORTS!!! So you will still import Goods but exports you have zero control over!

Well we`re leaving because we voted to leave . Plus I don`t for 1 minute believe the car manufacturers will pull out their deals because of Brexit but even if they did so there's a price worth paying to get back control and holding our own elected government responsible for their actions instead of unelected bureaucrats who take their direction from the gift bearing corporate lobbyists.

Mashing your gums about Brexit! Nothing to do with the diesel down turn or Trump threatening trade tariffs then. Also Honda have been behind the curve in electric hybrids being sold in Europe. Giving the HRV to a dust bowl in Mexico to build for Europe and the quality being crap hasn't helped either. Honda Swindon top in quality!

Nothing to do with Brexit and all to do with the fact that you killed your own industries back in the 1980s. The UK doesn't own most of the businesses that exist in the uk. TATA, BMW and others may shut down their factories with millions more jobless. Great Britain was killed by its two most admired PMs: Churchill (By going to wars) and Thatcher by killing manufacturing industry. You deserve it because you still don't get it.

Britain was ruined long ago. French, German and even Italian Car firms were successful simply because labour relations in these countries were ten times better. Continental countries enjoy better standards of living and quality of life because their politics are not polarised by class division. Uk managers were mere sychophants and incapable of leadership sand the same goes for the politicians. The UK is riven and broken. What country would invite armies of cheap labour from EEC and beyond to do their bidding while an untrained and obese army of benefit scrounging sloths live high, exporting their depravity to european holiday destinations? I wanted us to copy best practice from other EEC countries, but we ignored anything that worked like their railways and health service. We are heading for a mamoth collapse. Thanks Brexit!

It's not really British car manufacturing - it's German, Japanese and French car manufacturing. The British destroyed their own car industry. The British have failed as a people to create wealth - they don't value wealth creation they value welfare and consumerism. Most British people are to dense to realise that their country's economic model is based on attracting foreign capital, foreign businesses and importing foreign workers to generate productivity and wealth which is taxed to fund their beloved welfare state. Without foreign investment, businesses and people Britain would be classed as developing country.

So when you say British car manufacturing what do you actually mean? Not Diesel obviously those plants are de facto dead. Not really petrol now EU has deal with Japan no duties need to be overcome. So what. The only area where Britain has an edge is electric / fuel cell road, rail and skycar type autonomous transport systems. The car is just a small part of something much bigger that is happening in the next decade or so, but if we don't make the system we don't get to make the car. But sure you blame Brexit if you like. PS all cars being electric by 2030 might give you a hint.

BBC you CONFUSE manufacturing with assembly......the UK can barely claim to manufacture when morgan makes a 40 year old design in wood!! WE ASSEMBLE!! that is NOT manufacturing!! Having the expertise to design...cast...machine...test...develop..improve...monitor markets forecast...etc is a totally different thing than being told by Japan to screw A to B. No Civic ever came out of Swindon unless Japan said so. No improved models were started unless Japan said so. Expertise in production methods come from japan!! once they withdraw that learning and transfer stops...its not knowledge that the UK posseses...its training.. So these workers can take their current skills to solar making but they dont have behind them the knowledge of why they do what they do. So expertise ostracises...dies away..You get back to tge 70s where we were using 1930 manf methods against a rampant world. BBC reporters who can google and say we 'made' 1000 cars last year know nothing....and with respect the guys in Swindon to some extent have the same mindset. Id love to see Swindon become a new brit car marque. Remember delorean? That was at a time when there were still large manf car plant and therefore a labour base skilled in mass production. It FAILED. at its root were all the things above. Once honda takes its intellectual prop you will just have a space...and a bunch of people who knew how to assemble as they were told to awaiting instructions!

The girl is nice to mention a shift of the Swindon workers to green energy, but why should any company around the world invest in the UK? Not able to make a deal with the EU and no other deal approaching. A government which is much more interested in their personal political games and a country so much divided. Upcoming massive problems with NI and Scotland, etc. Companies doing their invest for log term and therefore they need stability. In addition, it's also the betray of the UK to e.g. Japans Companies having guarantee access to the EU single market. So, the damage is done, assets of 100 of billion pounds are also already transferred outside the UK.

I really didn’t understand what she was doing in this round. It’s not like a country just chooses a new industry they would like to dominate in and everything is fine. Green energy is getting more and more efficient for some decades now. Germany is world leader in wind power, China #1 in solar panels. And I’m not talking about 2-3 startup businesses. Those are major corporations. Does she really think Siemens would give up or relocate their €7bn wind turbine division so that the UK can become a champion in green energy after Siemens’ announcement of a potential de-investment after a no-deal Brexit?

Brexit has to be a factor in this decision because of the EU/Japan trade deal, but there's a much more worrying motivation, and that's the global shift away from internal combustion engined (ICE) cars and towards electric vehicles (EVs). This is the flip side of the move away from diesel. Manufacturing EVs is very different to ICE vehicles, so companies like Honda and Nissan will need to extensively retool and reskill. I hope I'm wrong, but with Ford only building engines and transmissions in the UK (fewer and fewer of which will be needed in the future), BMW building the upcoming electric Mini in China and Jaguar Land Rover exporting some much of their production, I suspect things are likely to get much worse. If the government had put more effort into supporting EVs, things may have been different. But then again, it's difficult to get people excited about electric car charging stations when their local councils are already crippled by austerity.

Honda's decision to leave is not based on BREXIT, if so they would leave in 2019, but they are actually going 2021. Why two years later when they've had two years forewarning? With a new EU deal with Japan manufacturing is of course returning to Japan. With trade barriers gone the rules change. The trade deal between the EU and Japan is why Honda is leaving, not because the UK is leaving the EU.
